ASG’s Olympia, WA Chapter Makes History!

by Ramona on October 18, 2011

We at ASG are ecstatic and proud to announce that the ASG’s Olympia Chapter President-Elect is — a GUY!

Eugene Barker, who will take office on January 1, 2012, comes to this position with a career in innovation and leadership behind him. He retired from the Boeing Company in 2005 as Senior Technical Fellow & Quality Director. He is recognized across the aerospace industry as a visionary regarding quality system design and implementation.

Before Boeing, Gene was employed in senior executive positions at The John Blue Company, Diamond Reo Trucks and was Director of Quality at Mattel, where he was a member of the start-up team for Hot Wheels. Gene, we owe you big just for the Hot Wheels.

Gene resides in Kent, Washington with his wife Jan, and enjoys garment sewing, costuming, quilting, machine embroidery, machine knitting, weaving and collects vintage clothing. His  collection of antique corsets were displayed at the 2011 ASG Annual Conference in Los Angeles this summer.

Gene used to sew 30 hours a week, but volunteer activities with the American Sewing Guild, quilt guilds, Pierce County, WA and volunteer work for his church and local hospital has really cut into his sewing time.

Congratulations to Gene and the Olympia Chapter! We are so looking forward to working with you in 2012, and have just one question: how well dressed is your wife?

So, members and other readers, what do you think of this ground-breaking event for the American Sewing Guild?

We are so proud to have Gene as our president. Maybe this will inspire more men to become members of ASG.

Awesome!! I know there are men who are members but it’s time that one of them steps up to a visible leadership position. Go, Gene!
