Inspired by “Notions”

ASG members, the Fall 2011 issue of Notions is coming your way very shortly with a very inspiring cover story — sorry, can’t give it away here!  Let me just say the sewing inpiration level is “haute”.

Has the editorial content in Notions inspired some of your sewing? It always inpires me, and I subscribe to many sewing, fashion and style publications. Here is one such project inpired by the Fall 2008 issue of Notions.

Linda Lee wrote the cover article for the Fall  2008 issue of Notions, titled “Mitering Magic”. One of the blouses illustrated in the article called out to me – really loud. The key in getting this look was to use fabric with a presentable wrong side. I found one in my stash — a blue/gray rayon print with a crinkly texture, which practically asked to be paired with the Now shirt pattern from the Sewing Workshop pattern line. I turned the cut edges back to the outside to create the front and hem bands. Using Linda’s instructions, the hem/front corner was mitered. Bands on the fronts of the unique collar were created the same way, by turning edges to the outside. When the collar and blouse were put together, it created a continous band going around the hem, up the front to the tube-like collar. I love this top! It has seen a lot of use since 2008.

There was not enough fabric to create a band for the sleeves, but totally enough for to cover this hanger! Look Ma, no waste.
Past issues of Notions can be seen in all their colorful glory on the ASG website in the Members Only page.  How have you been inspired by Notions? We’d love, love, love to know. Please comment!
